About Me:
I only moved once. Graduated CHS and went to UMC because I had a full ride scholorship from the Navy. It was the only way I could afford to go to school, I thought. I studied engineering because that was what the tests said I should be good at, although I had no clear idea what that entailed. I was goining to become an engineer, but I had never met one.

Two years into the NROTC program I abandoned ship. The unit had been run by a Captain, and he fit with the college envionment. But he was replaced by a Marine Colonel who more or less turned it into boot camp. I am no marine. A little calculation showed I could work making pizza and come out the same. So I did. It took a little longer.

Before I graduated I took a job as a surveyor. I was not very good at it, but I did it for several years. When the field measurements did not match record I was lousy dealing with the permutations. I was invited to take a permanent leave of absense.

I was unemployed over the weekend.

I went to work with a small company that drew plans for commercial construction, mechanical, elelctrical. We started hand drafting and went to cad while I was there. The second cad program I learned was Autocad. Pretty much self taught. I have a fine grasp of computers. And I spent about a dozen years sizing HVAC systems, routing ductwork, electrical services, plumbing, site work, etc. It was fun, but I spent most of my time drawing plans just to get past code requirements.

Somewhere, a little more than 25 years ago now, I met a beautiful lady and conned her into marrying me. She wanted to design. We both wanted a family. After graduating MU, she took a job with a local kitchen designer. When child #2 was on his way, we calculated that day care cost wiped out her salary, and decided that was the time for her to start her own business out of the home. Later, I joined her here. We draw house plans. I should have a better count, but I think we have done about 1500 jobs.

Then about a year ago I was diagnosed with renal celular carcinoma. Kidney cancer. That was a long road, but they took the right kidney out. Up side: if they got it all I am cured. Down side: if it recurrs traditional methods are not effecive. Grab the butter & jelly, 'cos I am toast.

When my first born was in 1st grade we came to discover that he had problems in school. After much investigation, we concluded that the fault was with the school and with trepidation, decided to home school him. We never looked back.

The eldest, Michael, took a few semesters at Columbia College to figure out what he wanted to do with himself. Then second son decided that he liked physics best, and we got him in at ( what used to be ) UMR. While Ben was a freshman there, Michael decided on Computer Science, and now they are both in Rolla. And I have a house that feels empty sometimes.

Daughter is an artist, and totally resistant to algebra. This is new to me, and I will have to grow through it. And youngest is 13 and wants to be an actor. Well, there is still time.

So, I stay at home a lot and draw house plans. Lovely house plans because my wife is quite a good designer. And I write a little code from time to time to satisfy my ego a bit. Just a hobby, really, but I use the code I write and it makes my world a little easier.

Welcome, I thought you must have fallen off the face of the Earth!!! How goes it in Columbia? I haven't seen you since I got out of school. Let's see if I remember right trombone? I have a tendency to remember some better than others. So, forgive these old brain cells if I got it wrong. What have you been up to since leaving good ole CHS? Get some pictures on here so we can see you and the family.
This is a great way to catch up with everyone and meet some new friends as well, that have at least one thing in common CHS.

I was taking my youngest to soccer practice last night when my cell rang. Not too many people have that number, it was Mike. That is how I found out about this site, Mike was here first.

Mike, you need a picture of Bucky, not that rabbit in your picture. Camp meat. :) [ thanks for bringing me on board. ]

I wanted to give a little thought to a bio. I wanted to get a feel for the room. Trombone, yes. In a nutshell, being so little work in Cabool, I went to UMC and studied engineering. I have even DONE a little engineering. Been married for 25 years, four wonderful kids. Eldest two are at Rolla, S & T, right now.

Of the Cabool graduates here, last time I checked, Mike Hood was our director of Parks & Rec. That is an important position here. Van Bond had worked his way up in a fairly large construction company. Greg Pettijohn is making himself hard to live without at a local cabinet shop. But the one I see most often would be Missy. Colour me lucky. Her children and mine have been playing together ( and at times against one another ) in the rec soccer league. She is teaching. And she gets to produce some theater, which is cool. I got to go to one of her productions and really enjoyed it.

But I am hoping she will check in here too, so I should shut up now.

Roy,

Great to see you on here and even better to hear from you.
Enjoyed reading your update and congratulations on your resiliency…very admirable.
Certainly hope you have beaten the situation….hang in there!
We look forward to seeing some pics of the family.

Rhonda and I had the honor of meeting your nephew, Matt, here in Florida last May. He and his wife, Jennifer (who is Rhonda’s first cousin) were on vacation at Daytona Beach. Let’s see…that makes you our long lost uncle-cousin in-law squared…or something like that??

That is awesome to hear that you have kids attending UMR (MU of S&T)…I recall many hours spent in the Computer Science and Physics Buildings. Those memories go back as far as Cabool High School Band contests (which I am sure you remember fondly) and FFA Judging contest on the campus as well. UMR was a tough school….but now I can appreciate those long days and short nights. My post-engineering schooling included a 3-year stint as a Dominos Pizza delivery driver and assistant store Manager…frustrating at times…but some great memories as well. Seems to be a strange relationship between pizzas and engineering…don’t you think?

We still have some good friends in Rolla…just don’t get back there frequently enough.

Let’s see……sister Dawn is in Nixa, MO……she is married to Tim Wright (you know one of those Houston Tiger graduates). They have two kids….Maggie, who will be 10 in October and T.J. who is 7, both kids attend Nixa schools. Dawn teaches business math classes for Ozark Technical Community College in Ozark, Branson and Springfield. They have a nice home located in the country south of Nixa near the Finley and James Rivers.

Scott is in Manchester, Mo…he is a partner with Edward Jones….he is married with 6 kids….the oldest just started college this year at the University of Arkansas. Scott’s kids ages are 18, 16, 13, 12, 9 & 7.

That’s all I got….hope you were able to stay awake thru the boring dissertation ….should have put a “Drowsiness May Occur - Do Not Read While Driving” warning at the beginning.

Talk to you later…stay in touch.

Steve

Roy,
I like the new updated version of your bio. Sounds like you have had quite the interesting life and you are as tough as always. I've got to tour your website. I find it interesting the many talents that have came from one small town and yet everyone still seems to have retained their small town sense of pride in accomplishment and where it all started.
Know what you mean about problems with school. Our youngest had difficulties, so he was child number two to be home schooled. Best decision ever. Kinda strange though because I taught in both public and private schools. Our oldest attended Willard and graduated in 1996. He was the resilient, outgoing, athletic, musician, I need to be involved in all school activities kind of kid. The other two not quite so, especially the youngest.
Get a picture or two of you and your family on here.

Hey, Roy - next time you see me in Columbia, shout at me, or run me down. Ray and I will be downtown for the remaining Twilight festivals, and also should be down town for the Roots and Blues fest. Randy's number is 573-635-2876 - he would love to hear from you.
